How to charge a hired Tesla in NSW
Charging a hired Tesla is straightforward when the route and stopping time guide the charger choice. Your current-generation 2026 Model Y or Model 3 is presented charged, and we explain the charge screen, connector, Supercharger process and in-car Trip Planner at handover. Tesla Superchargers are generally used for faster charging during a journey. Compatible destination chargers are slower and are often suited to a hotel, workplace or longer stop. The car estimates energy use and can suggest charging on a planned route, but the displayed range changes with speed, traffic, weather, elevation, climate use and detours. Who pays for charging, how a session is recorded and the expected return charge are confirmed by phone and in the hire agreement. How a Supercharger session starts
Enter the destination in the central screen and use the suggested Supercharger where practical. Navigate to the charging site, park in a suitable bay, open the charge port and connect the cable. The screen shows that charging has started, the current battery level and an estimated time for the planned onward journey.
Do not move away until the screen confirms that the session is active. When enough energy has been added, stop the session as directed, disconnect correctly and move the car from the bay. Charging locations can be busy, so avoid occupying a charger after the session is complete.
The handover covers these steps for first-time drivers. If a charger does not start, use the on-screen information and contact details provided for the hire rather than repeatedly reconnecting without checking the cause.
Why drivers often plan around 80%
Charging usually becomes slower as the battery approaches full. On a road trip, a shorter stop that provides enough energy for the next leg can be more efficient than waiting for 100%. That is why drivers often discuss an 80% rule: it describes a practical charging rhythm, not a fixed requirement for every journey.
Use the live estimate, Trip Planner and a comfortable arrival margin. A steep climb to the Blue Mountains, motorway speed, heat, cold, rain or a route change can affect consumption. Recalculate after adding stops. Never continue merely because a generic distance estimate suggests the car should make it.
Charging at accommodation, home or work
Ask a hotel or host whether a charger is operating, compatible, accessible to guests and available during the stay. A charger shown on a map may be private, occupied or subject to venue conditions. Confirming access matters more than seeing a pin on a map.
For a seven-day evaluation, note whether dependable charging is available near home and work. If home charging is not available, test whether regular Supercharger or destination-charger stops fit your actual routine. Do not connect to an unfamiliar outlet or use equipment that has not been agreed for the vehicle.
